English translation of abstract:

In the Netherlands colored female immigrants are using hydroquinone containing bleaching creams, without consulting their physician, in order to obtain a lighter complexion.
Hydroquinone can, especially when used unskillfully, cause unwanted side effects. Next to damage to the skin itself, psychosocial damage is possible.
An appeal is made to do further research concerning the use of skin bleaching agents in the Netherlands. Based on the results of this research information and advise can be given to (potential) users of skin bleaching agents and to professionals including medical doctors.
