About Color Foundation
Color Foundation was established in 1997 in Surinam by
Dr. Wiete Westerhof (dermatologist), Amsterdam, The Netherlands,
Dr. Henk E. Menke (dermatologist), Rotterdam, The Netherlands and
Dr. Jack Menke (sociologist), Paramaribo, Surinam. The first 2 board members had looked at skin color from a medical point of view their whole professional life, but they changed their attention gradually to the social aspect of skin color, thereby being professionally assisted by the third board member.
Surinam and The Netherlands have an intertwined relationship, which started in the colonial past. It brought together the original inhabitants (American Indians), Dutchmen and other Europeans, Jews, African slaves and contract labourers from Java, (East) India and China. Surinam obtained its independence in 1975. This multi-ethnic society inspired us, because the people have lived together in relative harmony for a long time.
